Can't Renew Your Maid's Permit in Sarawak? Use a Special Pass

Your maid's work permit is about to expire, you go to renew it, and it will not go through. You have not done anything wrong, and neither has your agency. Sarawak is midway through moving foreign domestic helper applications onto a new online system, and the renewal door is temporarily shut while that happens.

Permit expiring and can't renew? We arrange the special pass that keeps your helper legal. Call +6018-912 7977 or WhatsApp Zill.

The Short Version

If you only read one thing: your helper does not have to become illegal while renewals are unavailable. Immigration issues a special pass — a one-month extension that keeps her lawfully in Sarawak and able to keep working. It can be renewed again, month after month, until the proper renewal path reopens. That is the whole safety net, and it is the reason there is no need to panic.

Why Renewals Are Stuck

Sarawak is moving foreign domestic helper hiring onto HAVEN, the state's online portal for household employers. It is being rolled out in stages. New maid applications already go through HAVEN. The renewal side of the portal is not open to the public yet — it is expected to come online when HAVEN is fully launched later in 2026.

So there is a window where the old counter route for renewals has wound down and the new online one is not live. A permit that expires inside that window cannot be renewed the ordinary way — not because anything is wrong with your helper or your paperwork, but because the door she would walk through is being rebuilt. For the full picture of how the new system works, see our domestic helper service page.

What a Special Pass Actually Is

A special pass — Pas Khas — is a standard Immigration instrument. It exists precisely for moments like this: a foreign national is in the country lawfully, their status needs sorting, and the pass keeps them legal while that happens. It is not a loophole and it is not a grey area. It is the official mechanism.

For a domestic helper whose permit is expiring, the special pass is a one-month extension. During that month she remains legally in Sarawak and can keep working in your home as normal. Nothing about your household routine has to change.

The Part That Matters: It Repeats

This is the point most people miss, and it is the one that should put you at ease. The special pass is not a single thirty-day reprieve after which you are stranded. It is repeatable. When one month is up, another can be issued.

That matters because government launch dates move. If HAVEN's renewal path opens on schedule, you may only need one pass. If it slips a month or two, you simply bridge again. Either way your helper stays legal and keeps working the entire time — the timing of the system launch never becomes your emergency.

New Maid vs Renewal — Don't Confuse the Two

These are two separate situations right now, and mixing them up causes needless worry:

Hiring a new maid

Runs through HAVEN now. The new-application path is live and processing. No special pass involved — this is the normal route going forward.

Renewing an existing maid

This is where the special pass comes in. The renewal path is not open yet, so the pass bridges the gap, one repeatable month at a time.

What to Do if the Permit Is Expiring

The one thing not to do is wait until the permit has already lapsed. A special pass keeps a helper legal; it is far cleaner to arrange it before the expiry date than to fix a gap afterwards.

  1. Check the expiry date on your helper's PLKS now, not next month.
  2. If it falls within the next few weeks, arrange the special pass before it lapses.
  3. Keep the pass current, month to month, until HAVEN's renewal path reopens.
  4. When renewals resume, move her onto the proper renewal in HAVEN.

We handle special passes for domestic helpers as part of our placement service — the application, the timing, and keeping it current so your helper never slips out of status. If her permit is close to expiring, the sooner we look at the date, the simpler it is.
